To force a re-scan of the plug-ins do the following: Windows and Mac. Go to Options Preferences VST. Set your VST Plug-ins path, and click 'Re-scan' or 'Clear cache/re-scan'. Audio Unit plug-ins (Mac Only) are scanned by default on launch. Reboot Reaper and your plug-ins will be re-scanned. Oh and if you are running Reaper as your main DAW to run your VSTs through, this is, in my opinion, the best VST for Reaper that you are likely to find for the low, low cost of free. MT Power Drum Kit 2. Step machine is in the style of the step sequencer, although it is a midi loop sequencer. But to use it, you need to support midi output from the VST plugins. It offers control of the velocity, loop, pitch, octave, gate, and slide through each step as the host plays. A very detailed plugin for those looking for a professional touch.

Step 1.1 Download the Virtual Instrument (VSTi)

Nov 21, 2019 Make sure that Reaper is looking for the folder i which the VST is located. With luck you will have a folder somewhere called 'VST plugins' or similar into which you have put the VST.dll files, or into which you've unpacked zipped VSTs. It doesn't matter if they are in a different folder. You need to go to in reaper, select options at the top then select Preferences in the bottom of the list. Then on the left side scroll down to 'VST' and select that. Select the 'add button' on the upper right side. Best free open source vst effects. Now this will take you to your folders where Kontakt is (look in Program files or program files X86). All the DAW needs is the path to the plug-ins added to the VST Scan Path. Some plug-ins rely on registry entries including path information or have activation routines requiring the plug-in be installed instead of copied or added by mounting a drive. 1 Posted January 11, 2019.

This option is called ‘Bypass audio while opening plug-in config window‘ in the Plug-insVST settings. The good news is REAPER doesn’t crash anymore, the downside is playback glitches momentarily when inserting a plugin or opening the UI (which is the reason I disabled it before). If REAPER is crashing often, give this a try.

From this page download the BassMidi VSTi 1.2 zipfile.

Step 1.2 Unzip that file to your VST plugin directory

Two Common directories for VST plugins:

  • C:Program Files (x86)SteinbergVstPlugins
  • C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesVST3

If either of these folders exist or if you have admin privileges on your computer you can unzip the contents of the zipfile to one of the above folders. Since I’m working on a computer with no admin rights I had to make a portable install of Reaper in this folder C:REAPER so I navigated to C:REAPERUserPlugins and made a folder called VST.

Step 1.3 Make sure Reaper knows where your VST has been unzipped to

  1. In REAPER, press [Ctrl] + P (Windows) / [Cmd] + [,] (Mac) to access Preferences.
  2. Go to Plug-ins > VST.
  3. Under “VST Plugin Path,” make sure that the path where you placed your plugins is listed (if not, add it)… see the screenshot for how I added C:REAPERUserPluginsVST after the other two default folders.
  4. Click on Re-Scan and your instrument should be available within Reaper.

Step 2.1 Time to download a Soundfont to open within the VSTi we just installed

A free GM/GS soundfont has been shared here Reality_GMGS_falcomod.sf2 (version 1.2)
Thanks to Falcosoft for sharing the soundfont on this page

Step 2.3 Unzip the Soundfont to a folder / directory where you will store your soundfonts

You might choose to make a folder called “Soundfonts” in a location where you keep your loops and other audio resources… perhaps within the Reaper folder or another area on your computer where you keep things organised.

Step 3.1 Time to try inserting a Virtual Instrument into Reaper using the VSTi and Soundfont we just downloaded.

Note: If Step 1.3 went smoothly and you Re-Scanned the VST folder Reaper should be able to find the new plugin… If not, try re-scanning or perhaps try restarting Reaper. If that fails you will need to check that the directory to where you extracted the VST files is included in the VST plugin folders that Reaper looks in (as per the screenshot in 1.3). If that fails you might need to ask me for some help 🙂

However, it doesn't always re-scan. Today though, I have run Reaper twice and both times it scanned the plugins. The system is identical to yesterday's configuration, in which I ran Reaper and quit it many times, although it did scan the plugins paths three times out of all the runs.
Reaper scanning the plugins is still faster than ProTools just starting up though. BUT..I can't understand why sometimes it does this and other times it does not. It used to scan after a system restart and then I would be fine until the next crash that forced a reboot, which could be days or even weeks later. Now..it's happening often but just totally haphazardly, which seems quite odd.
I did check the Reaper installation folder and its Plugins and FX folders and I don't see anything in there that looks out of place. Certainly, I don't recognize anything that I have added to the plugins in the last month or so. The FX folder has only things that begin with 'Rea' anyway, so I'm pretty sure those are okay. And comparing the Plugins folder with an older installation I also have I don't see anything unusual.
It's a mystery!
