This is a VST that uses code which emulates the sound chip found inside of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive systems. It’s the closest you can get to the real thing currently without actually circuit bending a Genesis. If you don’t know/care what a Genesis is, this VST is basically a 4 operator FM synth. What can I do with it?

• GENNY size 2 MB / 2 MB GENNY emulates the Sega Genesis'/Megadrive's YM2612 and SN76489 chips. It allows you to create Sega Genesis style FM music in your favorite DAW, and it will allow you to use almost the full capabilities of the two chips.
• Size 1.74 MB Genesis is a 2 oscillators dual sequencer synth. 2 ADSR output envelopes. Effects: reverb, delay, 5-mode phaser, 3-mode distortion, frequency 'Mod' (chorus / pseudo-bitcrunch).
• The YM2612 FM Chip. DID YOU KNOW THAT THE SEGA MEGADRIVE GENESIS CONSOLE HAD AN FM SYNTH INSIDE? FMDRIVE is a VST SYNTH based on the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive YM2612 FM sound chip. From those who made the legendary early DX7 crunchy sounding FM sound chip!
• FREE Chiptune VST Plugin Instrument Released by Igorski Igorski has announced the release of VSTSID, a free chiptune VST instrument for Windows and Mac OS, based on a web app by the same author. This plugin is the VST equivalent of WebSID, a Chrome app emulating the Commodore 64 synthesizer.
• In their webpage ('Genesis Pro Update') when you click 'read more' you open a link recursively pointing to the same page. There is a forum opened 17 days ago, with latest posts written 17 days ago by the developper. Maybe next year Genesis Pro will be a good product, and maybe my 1€ investment will be good.

I learn a lot from documentations and all the nice people who documented the YM2612 on the web.

It turns out to be quite nice so I decided to make it public in exchange for a small donation for the large amount of work I put into this.
Package can also control the Little Scale GENMDM midi interface for those who have one or be converted into a VGM file for hardware play.

ABOUT FMDRIVE 2612 VST

This emulation uses a totally new core that I started from scratch a few months ago and was almost fine tuned by ear
so minors differences with the hardware could appears sometimes.(improved in 1.23)
The goal was on one hand to reproduce the hardware distortion of the sega megadrive and features of the YM2612 chip
and on the other hand to expand further the original capabilities and create a high resolution processing mode for perfect sound quality.

I tested the not well known CSM 'illegal mode' usage, designing custom roms to investigate further
and finally include a way in FMDRIVE 2612 to use it for modern music production.
All and all the YM612 EXTENDED emulation turns out to be a fantastic synth suitable for chip music
and FM nostalgic pleasure and also a powerful tool for modern production.

Fact is that the Megadrive had a very characteristic and cool sound, -much- cooler than Nintendo's
I grew up playing some great games on the genesis.
So, I thought the Genesis / Megadrive also deserves that kind of attention and its own project.

You may think, the YM2612 chip is basically another 4 Operator YAMAHA FM synth but there is more..
DAC, SSG Envelopes and Special operating MODES like CSM speech synthesis.
On top of that the SEGA had a distinctive distorted sound, more or less present, depending on revision models.
FMDRIVE add many extended features and huge user friendly GUI!

You can design a vast range of sound on top of 33000 instruments presets already available from Games ROMS.
Go further with extended controls, and even midi control a real sega genesis with a special hardware add on interface:

Extract sound settings from regular YM2608 .VGM Files and save them into .tfi files that FMDrive can import. Support Drag and Drop operation. (Win Only)
The YM2608 FM chip was pretty similar to the YM2612 so you can easily convert or extract sound presets from NEC PC88 or PC9801 Music.

Naruto's HOOT Voice Ripper which now include my AJ MOD with FMDrive support. Basically what it does is for those that use hoot to listen to FM chipmusic (awesome Japanese Sharp X68000 Music!), this tool basically has the ability to capture the current driver register map (via hotkey Ctrl+C while listening), and it will collect the current instrument operator data of that instance. You can export the captured voice data to several formats including the FMDrive raw data (.FMD) format

GENKMOD AJMOD Emulator
GenKMod is a popular open sourced emulator written by Kaneda (SpriteMinds Guru) based on Gen. My Mod consist of YM2612 and PSG Bug Fixes and Music debug layout change. Basically you can play your favorite game and watch the FM registers moving (great for learning) and also extract any voice setting into an FMDrive compatible preset format.

If you want to save your created sounds or use them into YM2612 emulators synths or trackers (FMDrive VST, Deflemask, VGMM), you can use an emulator like Regen or Gens to dump the channel as a .tfi file which can be loaded into capable VST or Trackers. SRAM support or Flashcard support could be added in the future to directly dump to SD card from the hardware. This brand new ROM was created and coded by Matt 'MrD', creator of Gravity Beam: Master Gaiden SMS Homebrew game and enhanced by Aly James, creator of FMDrive 2612 Vsti & SPSg Vsti. YM2612 Instrument editor lets you control the Sega Genesis FM sound chip in real time, access the main parameters of the Channel 1 and select which note to play. FMDrive with Little Scale's GenMDM
Long story short this zip file contains all you need to know about FMDrive GenMDM support, GenMDM is a custom hardware designed by Sebastian Tomczak, aka Little Scale, that can convert MIDI data into YM2612 and PSG Data commands hence controlling the Sega in realtime, like an hardware synth. The problem is that GenMDM is closed source, apparently discontinued and not available anymore, so no bug fix?. However I will have a new working open source hardware solution soon.
Still, GenMDM was a genius idea and Little Scale got all my respect forever, this guy is creative.
